Landfall Update: Deep Depression Crosses Andhra Pradesh Coast Near Kalingapatnam, Now Weakening Over Land

Landfall Confirmed

The Deep Depression tracked in our earlier bulletins crossed the north Andhra Pradesh coast near Kalingapatnam in Srikakulam district between about 2300 IST on 23 September and 0100 IST on 24 September, moving slowly west-northwestwards. It made landfall as a Deep Depression, as IMD had forecast, and was never upgraded to a cyclonic storm or named.

Current Position and Outlook

At 0530 IST on 24 September the system lay over north coastal Andhra Pradesh, about 50 km west of Kalingapatnam, 80 km north-northeast of Visakhapatnam and 170 km southwest of Gopalpur (Odisha). IMD expects it to move northwestwards, holding Deep Depression intensity for about the next 12 hours, then turn north-northwestwards and weaken gradually over the following 24 hours. Winds may gust to 75 km/h around the affected coast.

Impacts So Far

• Andhra Pradesh: heavy rain in Srikakulam and around Kalingapatnam at landfall, and flooding reported in low-lying parts of Vijayawada.
• Odisha: heavy to very heavy rain continues over the south of the state, where red and orange alerts were in force ahead of landfall.
• West Bengal: orange alert for Kolkata, Howrah, South 24 Parganas, Bankura, Purulia, Birbhum and West Bardhaman, with rain expected to continue through Friday 25 September and local falls of up to about 200 mm in places such as Dum Dum and Jhargram.

Heavy rainfall is forecast across coastal Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and West Bengal through 26 September. This bulletin does not yet include confirmed casualty or damage figures; we will add them once official numbers are released.
