A new system, IMD designation BOB/08/2026, has been classified as a Depression over the eastcentral and adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal. As of 0530 IST on 25 October 2026 it lay centred near 15.3°N, 91.2°E, about 440 km north-northwest of Sri Vijaya Puram (Andaman Islands), 880 km east-southeast of Visakhapatnam and 980 km east-southeast of Kakinada (Andhra Pradesh). This bulletin is based on IMD's National Bulletin No. 3 (BOB/08/2026), issued at 0900 IST on 25 October 2026.
IMD expects the system to move nearly southwards initially, intensify into a Deep Depression later on 25 October, then gradually recurve west-northwestwards. It is forecast to intensify further into a Cyclonic Storm over the eastcentral and adjoining westcentral Bay of Bengal by the morning of 26 October, and into a Severe Cyclonic Storm over the westcentral Bay of Bengal around the morning of 27 October.
Thereafter, it is very likely to move northwestwards, intensify into a Very Severe Cyclonic Storm, and reach the westcentral Bay of Bengal near the Andhra Pradesh coast around the morning of 28 October. IMD forecasts it will cross the Andhra Pradesh and Yanam coasts between Bapatla and Visakhapatnam as a Very Severe Cyclonic Storm, with maximum sustained wind speed of 115-125 km/h gusting to 140 km/h, by the forenoon of 28 October 2026.
An Orange Message cyclone alert is in force for the Andhra Pradesh and adjoining south Odisha coasts. Heavy to very heavy rainfall, with extremely heavy falls at isolated places, is forecast over Andhra Pradesh and Odisha on 27 and 28 October, with heavy rain also expected over Telangana, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Bihar and Gangetic West Bengal as the system moves inland on 28-30 October. Sea conditions are forecast to deteriorate to Phenomenal over the westcentral Bay of Bengal and along the Andhra Pradesh coast by the morning of 28 October.
Fishermen are advised not to venture into the eastcentral and southeast Bay of Bengal and off the Andaman Islands till 26 October, the westcentral and adjoining northwest/southwest Bay of Bengal from 26-28 October, and along and off the Andhra Pradesh-Odisha coasts from 27-28 October.
This system has not yet been classified as a cyclonic storm and has not been named. If IMD's forecast holds and the system reaches cyclonic storm intensity, the next name on the WMO/ESCAP North Indian Ocean list is Arnab, proposed by Bangladesh, meaning “ocean” or “sea” (from the Sanskrit “arnava”). This is a reference to the naming sequence only and is not a confirmation that the system will be named — follow our Active Systems page and official IMD bulletins for updates.
Residents of coastal Andhra Pradesh, particularly between Bapatla and Visakhapatnam, and of south Odisha, should begin preparations and follow local authorities as this system develops over the next three days.
