The Well Marked Low Pressure area tracked in our previous bulletin has intensified in stages, becoming a Depression on 21 September and a Deep Depression over the west-central Bay of Bengal on 22 September. As of the morning of 22 September, it was centred near 17.9°N, 86.3°E, moving west-northwestwards at about 17 km/h.
The system is very likely to continue moving west-northwestwards and reach near the north Andhra Pradesh – south Odisha coast around the morning of 23 September. Some reports citing IMD guidance point to the Srikakulam (Andhra Pradesh) to Chhatrapur/Ganjam (Odisha) stretch as the likely core-impact corridor, though IMD's own bulletins describe the landfall area in broader terms as the north Andhra Pradesh – south Odisha coast.
IMD has not issued a single maximum-sustained-wind figure for the system's core, but has warned of squally winds of 55-65 km/h, gusting to 75 km/h, over the west-central and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal on 23 and 24 September. Winds of 40-50 km/h gusting to 60 km/h are likely along and off the West Bengal coast from 22 to 25 September.
Heavy to very heavy rainfall, with isolated extremely heavy falls, is forecast over north coastal Andhra Pradesh, south Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Telangana and Vidarbha as the system moves inland.
IMD has not forecast this system to reach cyclonic storm intensity; it is expected to remain a Deep Depression through landfall and weaken gradually thereafter. It has therefore not been assigned a name. If it were to intensify into a cyclonic storm, the next name on the WMO/ESCAP North Indian Ocean list is Arnab, proposed by Bangladesh, meaning “ocean” or “sea” in Bengali (from the Sanskrit “arnava”). This is a reference to the naming sequence only and is not a forecast that the system will be named.
Residents of coastal Andhra Pradesh and Odisha, particularly Srikakulam, Ganjam and Gajapati districts, should follow local authorities and official IMD bulletins as the system approaches the coast.
